    Charles C. Edwards, DPM

Charles C. Edwards was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. After high school he served a volunteer two-year mission in Guatemala, there discovering his love and empathy for impoverished and under-served people. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Utah with a B.A. in Spanish, then travelled to the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain for a summer of intensive Masters’ level Spanish. While there he was able to study medieval and Renaissance Europe and Spanish, which topics he remains passionate about even now. His plans were always to pursue a medical degree with aspirations of working on behalf of under-served populations, so upon returning to Utah he completed his pre-medical studies. During this time he choose Podiatry as his path after encountering several Podiatrists who seemed to have each found an exemplary balance between professional and personal lives. He enrolled at Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, and along with his class became the first to graduate with the DPM degree from the re-established Temple School of Podiatric Medicine. He was honored to have been selected for the four-year surgical training program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia where he trained under and alongside many individuals whom he respects and reflects upon to this day. After completion of that training, he and his wife agreed to try and find an area of the country where Podiatry, and therefore the population, was under-represented. Alaska was calling, and he answered the call. Just one year into his professional career there - the Alaska Native Medical Center was seeking its first Podiatrist for its medical house staff in an effort to stem the rising tide of diabetic foot complications in that population, and this seemed to be the opportunity Dr. Edwards had hoped for all along. He applied and was accepted for that role in 2004, and has since developed it from very humble beginnings to a fully operational service of three Podiatrists serving the entire State’s Alaskan Native and American Indians living in Alaska. While he would be the first to admit many of his patients are far more educated and financially secure than he will ever be, many of his clients live in rural, remote communities with scant access to the normal comforts, services and healthcare the majority of the U.S. population enjoys. His works takes him around the state in all seasons, screening and caring for individuals in larger hub villages, while those patients from smaller, more isolated surrounding villages travel in to his clinics by jet, boat, bush plane, snow machines, ATV’s, and occasionally by dog team. This has been the most fulfilling job and role he could ever have hoped for, and it is his desire to remain where he currently serves for the entirety of his career. He lives in Anchorage, Alaska with his wife of 27 years, and has a 15 year old son attending a distinguished college preparatory boarding school in New England. His favorite pastimes are reading and writing in Spanish and English, learning Alaskan Native culture, nature and wildlife, listening to all music - but especially jazz, following baseball, and following ancient through modern art - especially cubism.
